Kerala has the highest literacy rate in India and an unusually large diaspora working in the Gulf, so Malayalam-language devices show up well outside the India storefront. It is also a market where localized content is expected rather than appreciated.
India.
This localization did not exist before 31 March 2026. Apple added it in the eleven-language expansion it framed around India, so most listings in this market are still English by default rather than by decision.

What breaks in Malayalam
Malayalam has the largest conjunct inventory of any script in this set, and its words are long even before the script gets involved. The combination means captions grow substantially, and that a font missing a conjunct will not fail visibly: it decomposes the cluster into separate letters that still look like text to anyone who cannot read it.
The conjunct inventory is the largest of any Indic script, and a font missing one silently decomposes the cluster instead of erroring
Traditional and reformed orthography differ in which clusters are written as conjuncts, so two valid spellings can measure differently
Chillu letters are standalone consonant forms that older fonts substitute incorrectly
Words are long before translation expansion is counted, so headlines routinely need a size step down
You type. The canvas builds.
Describe your app, see your first set, then ask for Malayalam. The layout survives the language change because you are editing the same set, not starting a new one.

Malayalam sets, handled
Noto Sans Malayalam rendering verified in exported pixels, with the conjunct forms actually drawn
Chillu letters preserved rather than substituted into their base consonant
Layout measured against real Malayalam widths, so long headlines reflow rather than clip
The same set you built in English, retranslated in chat without rebuilding the layout
Exports at the exact dimensions App Store Connect requires for the ml localization
Questions & Answers
How do I tell whether my Malayalam text rendered correctly?
This is the script where you cannot trust a glance, because the common failure is silent. A font missing a conjunct decomposes the cluster into its separate consonants, which still looks like Malayalam text to a non-reader while reading as misspelled to a native one. We load Noto Sans Malayalam explicitly rather than accepting a substitute, so the fused forms are the ones exported.
Does the ml localization reach Malayalam speakers in the Gulf?
Yes, and this is an underrated part of the case. Localizations follow the device language, not the storefront, so a Malayalam-language device in the UAE sees your ml screenshots. Kerala’s Gulf diaspora is large and comparatively high-earning.
Should I use traditional or reformed orthography?
Reformed is the safer default for interface and marketing copy: it is what most readers under fifty were taught and what most fonts render most reliably. The distinction matters to layout because the two write different clusters as conjuncts, so they do not measure identically.
When did Malayalam become available on the App Store?
On 31 March 2026, in the eleven-language expansion Apple framed around India. Before that date the localization did not exist.
