One app, four reasons to install

Habitly is an example habit tracker. Its original set is the control. Each concept below is a different idea about why people install, with the reasoning it was made on, exactly as the builder returned it.

The original

Your current product page. PPO measures every treatment against it.

Treatment 1: Lead with the daily win

Shifting the hook from a vague promise to the concrete daily-check feeling targets the moment a new user imagines themselves succeeding, which is a bigger emotional pull than 'stick'.

Treatment 2: Open with the streak proof

Surfacing the streak screen first turns the app's most visual, addictive feature into the hook, letting the UI do the persuading before a word is read.

Treatment 3: Speak to the failed-before user

Addressing people who have already quit other habit apps (as the 4.9 and the reviews imply) creates an immediate emotional match and makes the rating feel like genuine vindication.

How it works

You make the versions. Apple runs the test.

Product Page Optimization is free and built into App Store Connect. What it needs from you is the treatments.

  1. Step 1

    Build or open your set

The set you would ship today. It becomes the control, the version every alternate is measured against.

  2. Step 2

    Pick a mode

Bold concepts in under a minute, or One change each in about 2 minutes. Compare every version on the real cards as they finish.

  3. Step 3

Add them in App Store Connect

Download each version and create it as a Product Page Optimization treatment. Apple splits the traffic and reports which one converts.

One change each

When you want to know what worked

Each version moves one thing: the headline angle, the first card, the colours or the phones. A win shows exactly which change earned it. Ready in about 2 minutes.

Headline angle: Opens with outcome, not process

Reframing card 1 around the felt result ('finally build habits') rather than the mechanism ('actually stick') speaks to the user's goal first, which typically lifts tap-through on the first impression frame.

Colours: Light, airy palette replaces dark green

The control is dominated by deep forest greens and dark gradients; a bright, high-contrast light treatment will stand out differently in the App Store grid and may appeal to users who associate wellness and calm with open, airy aesthetics.

Before you test

My app has no traffic yet

Apple publishes no minimum, but a test needs visitors to say anything.

Practitioner consensus is that below roughly 500 product page views a day, a test will not reach a clear answer inside 30 days for anything smaller than a 10% change. A brand new app is under that line.

Launch ready, test ready. Ship the set you believe in now and keep the alternates. The day the traffic arrives, starting the test is an upload in App Store Connect, not a new design project.

Or test off the store first. Ads and paid audience panels can compare creatives before an app has store traffic, and the versions you make here are those creatives.

The full walkthrough, from choosing what to test to reading the result, is in our guide to running a PPO screenshot test.

Questions & Answers

Do you run the A/B test?

No. Apple runs it, through Product Page Optimization (PPO) in App Store Connect, and it is free. We make the versions you test: download each one and add it as a treatment against your current product page.

How many variants can I make?

On Growth and Pro, up to 3 for an App Store set, because PPO tests your current page against up to 3 treatments, and up to 2 for a Google Play set, the number of variants a Play store listing experiment takes. Starter makes 1 per set: your current page against one alternate, a plain A/B test.

What is the difference between Bold concepts and One change each?

Bold concepts are different ideas about why people install, each built from 2 or 3 changes, ready in under a minute. They suit a new or small app. One change each moves a single thing per version (the headline angle, the first card, the colours or the phones), ready in about 2 minutes, so a win shows exactly what worked. It suits an app with steady store traffic, or the step after a concept has won, and is on Growth and Pro.

What does a variant cost?

5 credits each, on any paid plan or trial. A version that fails its readability and layout checks is refunded.

Do my app screens change?

No. Every variant keeps the same app screenshots in the same frames, so the test compares how the set sells the app, never a different app.

Can I make variants for Apple Watch?

No. Apple does not offer Product Page Optimization tests for Apple Watch product pages, so there is nothing to test them in.

Can an AI agent make variants?

Yes, on Growth and Pro: the MCP server and the REST API both create and read variants. In the web builder they are on every paid plan and trial.
