What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of optimizing content for AI-powered search engines: Google AI Overview, ChatGPT (with web search), Perplexity, Claude, and similar. It's the counterpart to SEO for the AI search era. GEO targets citation in AI-generated answers, not just organic ranking.
The term was popularized by a 2023 Princeton University research paper that experimentally tested optimization techniques against AI-generated responses and ranked them by effectiveness. The paper identified "Statistics Addition" and "Cite Sources" as the top-performing GEO techniques, each producing roughly 40 percent visibility lift in generative engine responses.
How does GEO differ from SEO?
SEO targets organic ranking in traditional search results, with backlinks, on-page keywords, and site architecture as key levers. GEO targets being cited as a source by AI models that synthesize answers from multiple sources. The mechanics overlap (good content is good content) but the emphasis differs: GEO prioritizes content extractability (atomic answer blocks, semantic HTML), factual density (specific numbers, dated claims, named sources), and entity clarity (schema markup, Knowledge Graph connections).
