Information Gain
What is Information Gain?
Information Gain is a ranking signal Google patented in 2020 and reweighted as the dominant content-quality evaluator in the March 2026 Core Update. It measures how much genuinely new knowledge a page adds compared to other content already ranking for the same query.
The mechanism: Google evaluates whether a page contributes information that isn't already covered in the top organic results for a query. Pages that add new data, contrarian framing, named-source primary research, or proprietary methodology score high on Information Gain. Pages that comprehensively cover what other pages already cover score low, regardless of how well-written they are.
Why does Information Gain matter post-March-2026?
Per Google's March 2026 Core Update analysis from DigitalApplied, OutpaceSEO, and similar industry sources: "In 2026, Information Gain is no longer one signal among many. It is the dominant content-quality evaluator." Sites that previously ranked on length, keyword optimization, and on-page SEO without contributing new information saw significant ranking declines.
The same signal drives AI citation. AI-powered search engines preferentially cite content that contributes original information they can attribute, rather than synthesizing from generic content available across many sources. So Information Gain optimization is both an SEO play and a GEO play.
How is Information Gain articulated in App Store screenshot content?
For App Store screenshot content specifically: Information Gain comes from original observations the team can make about their own data, contrarian framing of widely-cited claims, named-source primary research (e.g. citing Apple's developer documentation rather than a third-party blog), and internal benchmarks (e.g. "across 50K builder iterations, layout X outperforms layout Y by Z percent"). Generic content rephrasing what's already published struggles to rank or be cited.
