What is App Store ranking?
App Store ranking refers to the position an app occupies across Apple's surfaced lists: search results for a given query, Top Charts (free, paid, grossing) within each category, Today tab editorial features, "Apps We Love" curated lists, and category browse pages.
Each surface has different ranking logic. Search rankings emphasize keyword match in the app name, subtitle, and 100-character keyword field. Top Charts emphasize install velocity (recent installs weighted more than total). Editorial features are human-curated by Apple's editorial team.
How does the App Store ranking algorithm work?
Apple has never published the algorithm, but ASO research has identified consistent signals. Relevance signals include keyword match in indexable fields, app category alignment, and localized metadata. Engagement signals include install rate (impressions to installs), retention (day 1, day 7, day 30), in-app purchases, and review sentiment.
Apple's OCR also indexes text inside screenshots and adds those terms to the app's effective keyword footprint. This is why screenshot caption text matters for ranking, not just conversion.
Why do screenshot changes affect ranking?
When screenshots improve and conversion rate climbs, more installs flow per impression. That higher install rate is itself a ranking signal: Apple promotes apps that convert well on the impressions they already receive. The compound effect is real: better screenshots win more installs, win better rankings, win more impressions, win more installs.
