AI Overview(AIO)
Also known as: AIO, Google AI Overview, AI Overviews
What is Google AI Overview?
AI Overview (AIO) is the generative AI summary Google displays at the top of search results for many queries. It synthesizes information from multiple web sources and presents a direct answer with inline citations. Google launched AIO broadly in May 2024 (rebranding from the earlier "Search Generative Experience" or SGE) and expanded it through 2025 and 2026.
As of 2026, AIO appears on roughly 48 percent of all Google queries (up from 12 percent in 2024). Trigger rates vary by query type: "best X" queries trigger AIO 83 percent of the time, comparison queries 95.4 percent, question-format queries 85.9 percent, transactional queries only 13-14 percent.
How does AI Overview affect organic search traffic?
AIO reduces organic click-through rates because users get their answer in the AIO panel without clicking. Industry analyses cite 34-61 percent CTR reductions on impacted SERPs. The compensation: brands cited in AIO get 35 percent more clicks than uncited brands when users do click. The strategy shift is from "rank organically" to "get cited in the AIO" for the increasing share of queries where AIO appears.
Why does AIO matter for App Store screenshot content?
App Store-related queries trigger AIO frequently (definition queries, "what is X" queries, comparison queries). Content optimized for AIO citation (atomic 40-60 word answers near the top of the page, dated claims, question-format H2s, schema markup) competes for visibility differently than content optimized purely for organic ranking. Glossary pages (like this one) are particularly well-suited for AIO citation because the format matches the model's extraction pattern.
